What is ISO 42001?

ISO/IEC 42001 is the first international standard for AI management systems. It sets out how an organisation governs the way it develops, deploys and monitors AI, covering accountability, risk assessment, transparency and lifecycle controls. It's to AI what ISO 27001 is to information security.

Who is this checklist for?

Compliance leads, CISOs and engineering or product managers preparing for a first ISO 42001 audit, or anyone scoping what certification involves before committing budget. It assumes you know your business, not the standard.

Do I need ISO 27001 before ISO 42001?

No. The two standards share the same management-system structure, so an existing ISMS gives you a head start (around half the groundwork carries over), but ISO 42001 can be implemented and certified on its own.

How long does ISO 42001 readiness take?

It depends on how many AI systems are in scope and how mature your governance already is. Most teams plan several months from gap assessment to audit. This checklist helps you map that work up front, so the timeline is a decision rather than a surprise.
